- SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking three qualified individuals for Botanist positions based in Hawaii to conduct survey, monitoring, and project coordination work on the islands of Kauai, Maui, and Big Island. Candidates must have experience with demographic monitoring of invasive and native species and the identification of common and rare endemic flora in Hawaii. This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position with wages commensurate with experience.Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with SWCA Hawaii staff, Hawaii Department of Transportation Highways Division and the local Invasive Species Committee.
- Assist Invasive Species Committee’s with roadside surveys for the early detection of invasive species. Conduct field surveys, prepare field equipment, identify and plan field logistics, and provide oversight of survey implementation and data management.
- Participate in and coordinate weed/pest eradication and/or control efforts in Highways Rights-of-Way (ROWs)
- Participate and coordinate in native plant restoration efforts in Highways ROWs
- Data and mapping:
- Accurately and completely record data on field forms or in other required formats- Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to navigate to and from project areas- Working knowledge of GIS spatial databases and tools for identification of land cover and other geographic features.- Review and interpret biological data and the primary literature- Coordinate meetings with local State and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations
- Help coordinate the various workshops being conducted for Highways maintenance staff and contractors. These include:
a. Two and half day long workshop based on the Highway Manual of Sustainable Landscape Maintenanceb. One-half-day workshop on best management practices on preventing the introduction and spread of invasive speciesc. Advanced training on Pruning vegetation in Highways ROWsd. Advanced training on application of herbicides- Monitor survival of plants in recently landscaped areas in Highways ROWs
- Collect seeds of native plants and coordinate seed storage
- Facilitate the establishment of a weed management cooperative. Coordinate stakeholder meetings to determine objectives of the cooperative and represent Highways at these meetings.
- Facilitate/integrate the establishment of a weeding and planting program within Highways Adopt-s-Highway Program
- Attend local Invasive Species Committee meetings to update on SNIPP activities
- Operate SWCA vehicles safely and follow all required safety protocols
- Photograph and document field site conditions, habitats, species, and landforms
Job Requirements:- A minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Botany/Plant Biology, or plant-related field required
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in plant-related fieldwork
- Excellent knowledge of Hawaii’s biogeography and vascular plant diversity
- Knowledge of invasive species issues in Hawaii
- Knowledge of botanical survey and monitoring techniques and ability to learn and implement new protocols
- Ability to record complete and accurate field notes
- Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies, weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to drive a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads
- Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner
- Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to implement traditional and novel field methods and scientific approaches
- Ability to work independently and synergistically as part of a collaborative team of technicians and resource scientists
