Job: Counselor (Kamehameha Scholars)

TitleCounselor (Kamehameha Scholars) 

DescriptionResponsible for implementing and providing counseling and guidance services to students/program participants. Researches best practices for effective counseling services and assists in the development of evaluative tools for program effectiveness and student impact. Collaborates with internal and external entities/organizations to provide information and services regarding students’ personal and professional interests. Communicates with KS and community to support program/institutional goals and represent KS accordingly.

Provides personal and social support to students and parents/guardians. Provides short-term individual counseling, which is non-therapeutic, solution-focused and problem-solving in nature. Facilitates appropriate referrals to community mental health agencies and support services. Develops and supports student skill development, based on topics of assessed need. Maintains a list of current area resources, and networks with agency professionals.

Provides academic guidance to program participants. Assists in student transition, retention, and graduation. Advises participants of post-secondary plan. Completes and files plan. Calculates student progress toward successful completion of educational program. Disseminates scholarship and financial aid information to students and parents. Networks with post-secondary institutions.

Records/Reporting/Evaluation. Meets Kamehameha Schools requirements for data driven decision making and accountability. Collects and records relevant data, action plans and results into database in a timely manner for use in program evaluation and student retention, persistence, graduation, and career development. Maintains a planning calendar for counseling activities. Evaluates and revises the counseling and guidance program based on the ASCA National model.

Implements the counseling and guidance program. Delivers structured developmental grade-level guidance curriculum that aligns with the ASCA National Standards. Provides data-driven interventions and strategies for student academic, career and personal/social needs.

Provides career guidance to program participants. Ensures that all students receive a student assessment. Provides information on career options. Networks with internal and external collaborators.

Ethics. Complies with ASCA (American School Counselor Association) Code of Ethics. Upholds and enforces Kamehameha Schools Code of Conduct, administration directives and regulations. Maintains appropriate confidentiality. Models and encourages awareness and respect for cultural diversity of students, families and staff. Represents department on various EES and institutional committees, activities and events. As appropriate, helps to plan, support and attend activities and special events.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
 

Position Requirements

  • Over 1 – less than 2 years of related work experience.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills: Access Database and Microsoft Office.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities and work flexible hours.

  • Familiarity with college financial aid policies and procedures; some knowledge of college policies and procedures.

  • Valid Hawaii driver’s license to travel to assigned colleges/universities and to community meetings.

  • Previous experience in counseling secondary or post secondary students.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Previous counseling experience.

  • Understanding and sensitivity to the Hawaiian community and culture.

  • Good working knowledge and familiarity with social welfare agencies, Native Hawaiian agencies and other community resources.

  • Familiarity with public and private post-secondary institutions.

  • Knowledge of KS mission and goals.
 

Educational RequirementsMasters Degree in Counseling, Guidance, Social Work, Psychology, Education or related field. In lieu of MA, BA with 2 years of related experience in counseling and guidance or post-high scholarship program experience or Training/Certification in Career Development and Facilitation & College Counseling and 4 years of related experience in counseling and guidance or post-high scholarship program experience.
 

Salary$46,300.00 per year minimum
