Employer Description
You are a senior graphic designer with talent to spare, able to contribute to the business bottom line thanks to your design and production work. Visual design is your craft, your calling, your passion. You are a pro who understands that visual content can make or break a campaign. With a mouse or a stylus you can start with a concept or a pile of notes… and transform them into a compelling branded piece that’s actually fun to go through. You’re able to emphasize key messaging points in the production of a video, add value to copywriter’s work and enhance (or drive!) user experience on a website and through mobile tools.
But you learned how to do all that ages ago (kind of)… and it’s just one aspect of your mind-boggling talent in visual content creation:
- You like to add value, no matter what you do, otherwise you’re unsatisfied.
- You understand how visual content makes and breaks a campaign and make it a priority to gain a full understanding of the goal of a campaign and the audience it targets.
- You have a knack for keeping up with trends, including social and cultural, interactive and mobile, advertising/ and design and implementing them into your work.
- You have a thorough understanding of web, typography, layout and photography. So much so that you cannot stand kerning or spacing discrepancies and will literally prefer to stay overtime to fix these little details before being satisfied and heading on home.
- You understand that a project has no point unless it’s timely out the door (and on budget!), so while you are a stickler and have a good eye for detail, you consciously ride the wave between tweaking toward perfection and producing powerful visual content tools.
- You are passionate and like to have fun, and weave both into your work.
If this is you, we want to meet you. And hire you.
As the Creative Services Manager with the Marketing and Communications team at Professional Photographers of America (PPA), you’d work with a high-energy team of creative professionals to plan, develop and produce top-quality multimedia educational, informational and engaging visual tools for all sorts of platforms and supports.
In a nutshell you’d :
- Create, from start to finish, at times alone, at times with others’ help, engaging collateral materials, marketing campaigns and large-scale interactive projects.
- Manage the day-to-day project pipeline, monitoring and maintaining projects’ scope and timelines, but also ensure overall and continued branding and quality assurance.
- Supervise, direct and provide guidance to our staff and contract graphic designers, reviewing graphics art designs and copy layouts, including assembling final print ready art files.
- Polish, push and defend PPA’s brands, while adding value and helping MarCom take things to the next level.
All in a day’s work. Piece of cake.
The team you’d join is strong, amazingly talented, incredibly generous, and needs another caring, fun colleague, co-player, partner, teammate, you name it: someone who’ll contribute 100%. Every day. Sounds exciting? It is. Challenging? You Bet!
What Is PPA you ask? More photographers get into the industry every day, but few know how to profitably run a business and many don’t know where to turn for support. That’s why Professional Photographers of America (or PPA) was started back in 1869, and that’s why we exist today. Created and led by professional photographers, PPA is a non-profit international association that helps those serious about photography live their dreams profitably. To do that, we…
- Lead the way in educating photographers on business and technical skills to help them grow and succeed beyond what they believed possible.
- Connect photographers with other great minds in the industry—via online and live classes, consultations and conventions—to spread best practices, new ideas and strong networks of support.
- Protect photographers’ livelihoods with benefits, such as copyright advocacy, malpractice protection and equipment insurance.
Over 26,500 photographers rely on PPA now, and we are always looking for and investing in new ways to provide the resources and support they need. Sound like a mission you want to be a part of? Then we want you!
PPA has also worked very hard to create an exceptional team of 45 employees with non-traditional benefits. Yes we have health and dental insurance, 401(k) plan, paid time off, etc., but we also offer a performance-based annual bonus, year-round casual dress code, gym membership benefits, a fantastic summer hours program, plus, the biggest thing of all: we have a lot of fun.
What you'll need to bring to the table:
- BA in Computer Science, Graphic Design or similar
- 5+ years of senior graphic design experience (any work involving cultural, lifestyle or local content earns major brownie points)
- 3+ years of graphics project management experience
- Expert level of technical artistic background (i.e. clear understanding of color and design theories, a demonstrated ability to draw, etc.)
- Firm knowledge of AP style but knowing when to break the rules for style and effect
- An extensive portfolio of website design and graphic design work (online and print) including marketing materials, websites, and tradeshow booth graphics and signage.
- Knowledge of best practices in print, web and mobile production
- Fluency in the Adobe suite of graphic design programs, Microsoft PowerPoint, and marketing automation tools
- Search engine optimization skills will be a plus
- 2+ years of experience mentoring, coaching or directing graphic designers
- Ability to multitask like a champ (a must!)
- Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Problem solving to identify issues and create action plans for all creative design services
Interested? Sweet. Here’s what we need from you now:
- A cover letter that represents YOU, your experience with developing branded materials (print , mobile and online), and why you’d be a perfect fit for PPA (Standard, no-personality cover letters need not apply)
- Real world design and production samples (no class projects) proving your witty, informative, creative, visual content creation (hint: reviews from your cousin won’t work)
- Links to Behance, CrowdSpring, Instagram, websites, Flickr, Tumblr, your personal blog-o-sphere (to show us your work and creative juices)
- Your resume and salary history
