Summary of Duties: | |
Provides direct casework and related services for the full range of cases coming within the scope of a department's social work program; makes independent analysis of client's situation; makes reasoned conclusion as to preferred course of action and provides necessary services and treatment; prepares case records and reports; and performs other duties as required. | |
Minimum Qualification Requirements: | |
Applicants must meet the requirements specified in A, B, C, D, E, F or G below: A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in a social science plus one and one-half (1 1/2) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience. B. Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work plus one (1) year of progressively responsible professional social work experience. *C. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from an accredited university plus one (1) year of progressively responsible professional social work experience. Emphasis in the major field of study must have included courses in abnormal psychology, counseling, probation, parole and correctional administration. D. Successful completion of two (2) years of graduate study in an accredited school of social work plus one-half (1/2) year of professional social work experience. *E. Successful completion of two (2) years of graduate study in an accredited university specializing in criminal justice administration plus one-half (1/2) year of professional social work experience. Emphasis in the major field of study must have included courses noted in Category C. F. Master's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work. *G. Master's degree in criminal justice administration from an accredited university. Emphasis in the major field of study must have included courses noted in Category C. *Minimum Qualification Requirements for Corrections Welfare positions. Driver's License: For certain positions, applicants may be required to have a driver's license. Non-Qualifying Experience: The following types of experience are not considered qualifying social work experience: (1) Experience providing supportive services to professional social workers, vocational rehabilitation specialists, public housing managers, or other professional workers in such programs as public welfare, family court, etc.; (2) experience determining the eligibility of applicants/recipients for benefits under a public welfare program such as medical assistance, food stamps and other benefits; (3) experience providing vocational, educational, psychological, or pastoral counseling; (4) experience providing occupational or physical therapeutic services; (5) Peace Corps or VISTA work experience which did not require the application of professional knowledge of the principles and practices of social work and/or was not performed under competent professional supervision; (6) experience relocating clients who are displaced as a result of urban renewal or other similar reasons; and (7) trainee level type social work experience will not be considered qualifying unless work is performed under competent professional social work supervision. | |

Transcripts: Evidence of completion of appropriate course work (e.g., official transcript for degree in a non-social science field, or criminal justice administration, or a social science or social work degree) must be submitted at the time of application. SPECIAL NOTE FOR MSW CANDIDATES: If you will graduate with your Master's in Social Work (MSW) degree within six months and you will meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements upon graduation, you may apply now. If selected, your effective date of employment will be set once your MSW degree is conferred and all pre-employment requirements have been met. (Please make sure you select the "Within six months" response option under the "Social Worker Education Requirements" supplemental question.) EXAMINATION: A social worker skills assessment test may be administered to persons receiving appointments who do NOT possess a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or have not successfully completed at least one (1) year of graduate study in an accredited school of social work. The test will be administered during the initial six months of employment and will serve as a supervisor's diagnostic tool to provide necessary training in areas of concern. Qualification for Firearms: As applicable to the position, must be qualified to possess firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction. Transcripts, Certifications, and other documents: You must submit copies of official transcripts, certifications, or other documents by mail at the time of application.
